I'm a first time author, and never published before. (I've been debating about how to try to get published, or if I should just try to self publish. (I'd love any advice anyone has to offer on that topic - I'm a newbie)
I have a pretty solid draft finished, and i came across this site while I was googling ways to try and design a cover. I have to admit I'm intrigued. I'm thinking maybe now of adding a few pictures, but I'm not sure how to get started. Do I go back and just add in a few images here and there for emphasis? Does that 'count' as feelustration, and is it really adding anything?
(BTW - I loved Gaia's Wasp and am part of the way through Dandelion Slap. )

Would a handful of feelustrations improve your book? Maybe, but it would be tricky. Three factors to consider are:
1. Decent pictures require coated paper, which increases printing cost and doubles the book's weight. Photos on uncoated paper are worse than nothing. To minimize this cost, the pictures must be crammed into a few separate, 16-page sections. But this won't work with feelustration.
2. Plain (monochrome) kindles can't display decent pictures.
3. The Gaia's Wasp books include (on average) one feelustration per two-page spread. That will set your readers' expectation.

Thanks. That is helpful. I hate it when you are reading a history or something and all the pictures are in the middle. By the time you get to them, you missed the point. Then some of the pictures give away the ending. I keep flipping back and forth. Now I get why...I never really thought about it from the printing cost before.

Why not try black and white? I think you could probably get get some pretty cool effects across this way.

Black and white pics can look okay on plain paper, not spectacular but better than nothing. The trick is that black and white is all about contrast. If you convert a pic from color to monochrome, you will probably need to turn up the contrast a lot.
